Bob Caruso: Deloitte

Deloitte provides industry-leading audit, consulting, tax and advisory services to many of the world’s most admired brands, including nearly 90 percent of Fortune 500® and more than 7,000 private companies.

The Challenge

When I was brought on, Deloitte’s performance in the entertainment sector was weak. My challenge as a member of the leadership team was to help bring the practice to prominence. Key target for the work was a deeper penetration of the firm into the studio and post-production market. Content piracy prevention and reduction was the remit from the world’s premier entertainment company, home of the most respected and beloved brands around the globe. This business was experiencing high levels of content piracy in both theatrical and digital distribution.

My Role

Senior Manager, Entertainment, Media & Communications

‍My specific area of focus in the entertainment, media and communications (EMC) space was a result of nearly a decade of organization development work in this highly competitive arena. I played an integral part in building relationships with key strategic clients, developed go-to-market strategies and delivered results to clients while recruiting and developing talent, which made for a very full calendar.

The Work
  • Identifying critical near-term needs for the sector led to a focus of the challenges of digital transformation that the industry was experiencing.
  • Moving from analog print production and distribution to digital required a significant strategic shift in process and technology.
  • We conducted a thorough and complete security audit tracing each step of the process from print production to theatrical showing evaluating the security measure at each activity.
  • Findings resulted in a comprehensive set of recommendations that spanned enhanced physical asset security as well as digital security measures.
The Outcome

My team worked on evaluating security practices throughout the studio from early-stage content to completed content. Working together with senior executives, we determined key vulnerabilities that required immediate attention, developed recommendations and a clear action plan for resolution. Within a few months we had plugged many of the security holes and worked closely with the key industry associations to deploy anti-piracy measures. Enhanced asset security put in place significantly reduced loss of physical assets in transit as well as state-of-the-art digital security protection.

Content Development Value Chain

Content piracy was rampant, and the importance of the work demanded urgent action. It was a whirlwind of activity that required us to engage 24/7 to develop countermeasures protecting iconic productions from piracy.
