Job Description

Location: Tampa, FL
Dates:  Full Year (8 months), Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Summer 2023

As a Research Intern at Orchid Black, you will focus on client (or internal) engagements across our Market Research & Analytics (MR&A) practice. In this practice, we gather, aggregate, and develop actionable customer and competitive insights so that businesses can clearly understand their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to reach their full potential.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to engage with businesses across a broad range of industries and sizes (growth-stage startups, SMB, Enterprise). The activities you will be doing on a day-to-day basis might include:

You may also be given the opportunity to impact Orchid Black’s Growth Services practice by rigorously analyzing the value of a business in its current state through our proprietary Value Creation Assessment (VCA). In VCA engagements, you will be responsible for working directly with our clients to analyze each segment of their business (strategy, talent, product, revenue, and operations). The output from your analysis will empower Orchid Black’s team of growth experts to develop and execute a set of strategic recommendations that help our partner-clients reach sustainable growth.

Orchid Black encourages all of its Research Interns to continuously develop their skill sets and gain experience. Interns will gain first-hand knowledge of clients’ business issues while building analytic, research, solution development, and communications skills. Under supervision, interns will have the opportunity to take ownership of specific tasks on client projects to support the broader problem-solving effort.

Research Interns will be required to complete initial onboarding/training to fully understand Orchid Black’s methodology and approach. Once training is completed, Research Interns will contribute to projects by serving as project team members within the Market Research & Analytics (MR&A) practice.

The Research Intern possesses excellent communication and organizational skills, and a strong focus on client satisfaction. The workplace environment at Orchid Black is dynamic and an Interns’ day-to-day activities will vary depending on their assignments.

 Essential duties include:

GENERAL

  • Proactively manage their own workload and collaborate with associates and operating partners across multiple projects & initiatives
  • Follow OB processes and methodology
  • Regularly contribute to process improvements and best practices
  • Report on progress and provide relevant information during project reviews
  • Review and provide guidance / assistance to other team members
  • Participate / contribute in regularly scheduled company calls & meetings
     

CLIENT SERVICES

  • Collect data on companies, customers, competitors, industries, and markets to consolidate information into actionable items, reports and presentations
  • Understand business objectives and design methods to discover key data sources and elements to gain insights
  • Compile and analyze statistical data using modern and traditional methods
  • Perform valid and reliable market research SWOT analysis
  • Interpret data, formulate reports and make recommendations
  • Provide competitive analysis on various companies’ market offerings, identify market trends, pricing/business models, sales and methods of operation
Job Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Rising senior working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Statistics or related field from an accredited university

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience working in a professional business environment
  • Proven Market Research Analysis experience is a plus

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities and strong attention to detail
  • Research skills - An ability to do “deep dives” in different products, companies, and sectors, and develop new insights
  • Strong analytical skills, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data
  • Problem solving and critical thinking - analyzing and simplifying complex issues; identifying problems and operational bottlenecks; developing potential solutions; and implementing and executing them
  • Adequate knowledge of data collection methods (polls, focus groups, surveys, market research, customer interviews, etc.)
  • Highly motivated self-starter who creates opportunity does not wait for direction, is highly organized and operates with limited management – this role must be resourceful
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills. Ability to work with agile culture with a mix of different personality types. Must have proven ability to influence others to achieve results
  • Strong organizational skills –must be comfortable managing (and prioritizing) multiple tasks on multiple projects
  • Basic understanding of the technology landscape for business uses
  • Search engines, web analytics, and business research tools acumen
  • Proficient in business productivity tools (Microsoft Office, Google Suite)
  • Knowledge of statistical packages (SPSS, SAS or similar) and databases a plus
  • Working knowledge of data warehousing, modeling and mining a plus
  • Familiarity with CRM systems
Physical Demands
  • Continuous sitting for prolonged periods more than two consecutive hours in an 8 hour day interspersed with mobility
  • Keyboard use of greater or equal to 40% of the workday.
